Senator injured in fall from bicycle

Senate Minority Leader Fred Hemmings suffered a dislocated right shoulder Monday night when he fell off his bike trying to avoid a car.

HEMMINGS
Hemmings, R-25th (Kailua, Waimanalo, Hawai'i Kai), yesterday said that he was riding on the bike path in Kailua when a car pulled out of the driveway in front of him. He jammed on the brakes and fell over the front of the bike. His arm is now in a sling.

The real story, Hemmings said, is that a Good Samaritan named Mike Imanaka drove him to Castle Medical Center. Hemmings said halfway to the hospital Imanaka informed him he was a Democrat.

Hemmings also joked that his injury could be another example of a political omen.

"My right knee has been operated on three times, I've had my right hip replaced, now my right shoulder has been dislocated," he said, adding that he also cut some toes off his right foot while mowing the lawn. "I'm trying to figure out what the political suggestions are here. ... It's definitely the right side of me that takes a beating."
