Man charged in carjacking
A 31-year-old man was charged yesterday in connection with a carjacking and traffic accident that injured four people Monday. Steven Adams was charged with second-degree robbery, auto theft, three counts of failure to render aid, and first-degree negligent injury. His bail was set at $35,000.
Adams is accused of stealing a woman's Lexus at the corner of Philip Street and Kalakaua Avenue Monday afternoon. Police said the woman tried to stop the theft and was hit by the car.
While fleeing the scene, the suspected car thief ran a red light and collided with a Dodge Neon at the intersection of Punahou and King streets, police said. The driver of the Neon and two child passengers were injured.
Sale of big bean to aid food bank
A giant Boston baked bean is up for auction on eBay through Aug. 1 as a benefit for the Hawai'i Foodbank. The bean four times the size of a normal Boston baked bean is larger than a dime.
Navy Petty Officer Mike Evans discovered the bean and decided to auction it to raise money for the foodbank. Last year, Evans auctioned off an oversized Cheeto and raised $1,180 for the Northeast Iowa Foodbank.
War reporter's papers donated
The USS Missouri Memorial Association Inc. has received documents originally belonging to Spencer Davis, a former Associated Press war correspondent and reporter for The Advertiser. Davis made history when he filed the first AP reports about the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor and the surrender of Japanese forces aboard the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945.
The documents were donated by Rear Adm. (Ret.) Daniel W. McKinnon, who is married to Davis' niece. They include an original report of the attack on Pearl Harbor, an annotated draft of Davis' dispatch filed after the Sept. 2, 1945, surrender ceremony and detailed "war diary" accounts.
