JIM LEAHEY
Sportscaster Jim Leahey and K5, which owns the television rights to University of Hawai'i sports, have reached agreement on a two-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed, although Leahey is expected to receive a raise from the $180,000 he earned last year.

Leahey, 60, will begin his 20th year as the play-by-play announcer for UH sports. He has been named Hawai'i's Sportscaster of the Year 19 times. He said this is the first multi-year contract of his broadcasting career.

"I don't know how to act with a two-year contract," Leahey said.

John Fink, K5's president and general manager, said: "Jim is the consummate sports announcer, arguably the best in the history of Hawai'i sports. We're happy to have him as part of our team, as always."

The length of Leahey's deal coincides with the remaining two years on the contract between K5 and UH. Awarding a two-year deal, Fink said, "is a recognition of the work Jim has done, and so there's a sense of security on both sides."

Fink said Leahey will have an expanded role of tutor to young reporters and contributor to KHNL-8 newscasts. KHNL-8 and K5 are affiliate stations.

Of the new deal, Leahey said: "I not only have the best job in Hawai'i, I have the best job in the world in the best place in the world. I'm very satisfied, and I look forward to the next two years."
