Castle raises money for lunch benches

 •  $1 lunches no bargain for students

Castle High students raised $3,000 at a recent car wash and at a Windward Mall game day for new lunch benches at the school.

Students kicked off a $60,000 fund-raiser for the project last month to improve the courtyard outside their cafeteria, which is too small to seat everyone for lunch.

The plan calls for grading, interlocking brick paving, trees and grass, and benches and tables.

Regina Yoshimori, student activities coordinator, said more donations are arriving at the school office, but she didn't know how much.

The project's planning committee wants to raise at least $25,000 in cash and hopes suppliers can donate the materials for the project.

The project designer, landscape architect John Mossman, said construction materials needed include concrete, interlocking bricks, grass sod and foxtail palms.

Students hope the courtyard seating area will be able to accommodate 200 students. Castle has 1,800 students but its cafeteria can seat 450 people at a time. Lunch is served in two shifts.

Organizers want to have the project completed by fall.
