HONOLULU

TUBE to hold free concert

The Japanese rock band TUBE will put on a free concert at 4 p.m. today at the Banyan Courtyard of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel. The band offered to put on the concert to bolster Hawai'i's tourism industry with Japanese visitors.

Also scheduled to perform are Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Jake Shimabukuro and Keahiwai. Seating will be limited to about 250 people. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at 10 a.m. in the hotel's main lobby.


Conservation work awarded

Hawai'i has been awarded about $1.1 million in federal grants for 11 conservation programs, U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie's office announced Thursday.

The largest grant was $245,000 awarded to Castle & Cooke Resorts for a project to protect and restore the native forest ecosystem of the Lana'ihale Cloud Forest on Lana'i.


Castle senior wins art contest

Sean Connelly, a Castle High School senior, took first place in the annual congressional art contest Kaha Ki'i: An Artistic Discovery, and his charcoal/water-colored pencil drawing "My Mother the Hula Dancer," will be on display for a year in the U.S. Capitol.

Connelly and his art teacher, Alicia Rogan, will be flown to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony. Connelly is the class valedictorian.

Second place was a tie between Baldwin High senior Liane Donato and Maui High senior David Hasegawa.


Singer plans library visits

Jordan Segundo, a Farrington High School senior and former participant on "American Idol," will be at 12 libraries this summer to sing and share his experiences on the television program.

Segundo will appear at 2 p.m. June 10 at Wai'anae library and at 6 p.m. the same day at Wahiawa library. He will visit Kailua library at 3 p.m. June 12.


Fifth-graders to share research

Fifth-graders at Kuhio School will share what they've learned about the Ala Wai watershed at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the school. The students studied the history and environmental effect on the area. In addition, the Mo'ili'ili Community Association will share oral history of the area Wednesday and Thursday at the school.

Hilo closes east baggage claim

Beginning tomorrow, passengers arriving at Hilo International Airport will be directed to pick up their luggage at the airport's west baggage-claim area. The airport's east baggage-claim area will be closed for renovations.

The work is related to an ongoing reroofing project, which is scheduled to run until October. For more information, call airport officials at (808) 934-5801.
