Two Lana'i High alumni honored

The Lana'i Alumni and Community Association recently honored two Lana'i High School alumni at its annual meeting. Dr. Daniel T. Anbe, class of 1952, is a nationally recognized cardiologist and former president of the Michigan chapter of the American College of Cardiology. Kiyoshi Minami, class of 1941, who began teaching at his alma mater, has had a long career as a state Department of Education administrator and personnel officer.


Award given for cancer research

Leslyn Hanakahi, a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawai'i, has received the Rita Allen Foundation Scholar's Award for cancer research. The award provides $50,000 a year for three years for clinical and basic research. Hanakahi is now at Johns Hopkins University.


Musicians win scholarships

Ann Tanimoto of Hilo was awarded a $2,000 first-place scholarship by the Hamakua Music Festival at its ninth annual scholarship program auditions. Tanimoto, a violinist, played before a panel of five judges.

Pianist Tiffany Mendoza of Hilo won the $1,500 second-place award, and the $1,000 third place award went to pianist Jaynell Cantor of Kailua, Kona.

Honorable mention went to Tito Jankowski of Kapa'au and Allison Brown of Hilo.


Maryknoll pupil gets $1,000

Denise Nelson of Maryknoll School has been awarded the $1,000 University of Hawai'i Founders Alumni Scholarship.

Nelson is president of the National Honor Society at Maryknoll and editor in chief of the student newspaper.


Two students to represent state

Maricor Coquia of Saint Francis School and Devon Parkhurst of McKinley High School have been chosen to represent Hawai'i at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C., July 18-25 at George Washington University.

They were selected at a recent leadership seminar at the Pagoda Hotel. The World Congress at George Washington University will be attended by 350 10th-graders from the United States and 22 other nations.


Student wins math honors

Nicole Gaetjens of Kamakahelei Middle School on Kaua'i has been named a mathematics national award winner by the United States Achievement Academy.


Commodore receives award

Commodore Robert L. Airhart has been recognized as teacher of the year at Windward School for Adults. The award was accepted on behalf of all eight Coast Guard Auxiliary instructors of Flotilla 1 to 14 Kane'ohe.


Correction: Two Hawai'i students will represent the state in the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation World Leadership Congress next month. The name of the organization was incorrect in an item in a previous version of these briefs.
