Haas handles Memorial's weather

Associated Press

DUBLIN, Ohio — Frigid temperatures, swirling wind, horizontal rain. Jay Haas had been here before.

The Memorial Tournament is famous for absolutely dreadful weather. Haas was on hand for the tournament's worst day ever and was playing in yesterday's third round, which many considered No. 2 on the list.

The 49-year-old Haas was one of only 11 players in the 70-player field to break par yesterday as the wind shook the trees and threw shots off line, and a cold, drenching storm halted play for 46 minutes and the temperatures dropped into the 50s.

"You've got to be patient and not get too flustered and try not to do too many crazy things," he said. "You can't do spectacular things out here. You make par, par, par, and then maybe something will go in for you. Probably 75 or 76 is par today."

He was close. The 70-player field had an average score of 75.5 strokes.
