Students excel at language arts

Five Maryknoll students received the highest honors in this year's Language Arts Showcase, a statewide competition for students in grades 4 through 12. Honorees include:

Fifth grade — Jennifer Kiyotoki, informational category, "September 11, 2001"; Claire Hann, essay, "Caring for God's Creation."

Eighth grade — Carli Ing, short story, "The Water Charms"; Christopher Ching, informational category, "Boy Scouts: Building Fires, Building Shelter, Building Character"; and Mie Omori, poetry, "Of Butterflies and Blue Jeans."

Seventh-grader Olivia Kaweheonapua Uchima received an honorable mention in the poetry category for her entry, "Mountains of Hawai'i."


Student honored for literary skills

Laura Quek, a senior at Hawai'i Baptist Academy, won top honors for her yearlong achievement in the Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of prose and poetry, similar to literature questions on the SAT, SAT II, and English Language and Literature Advanced Placement tests.

Quek was the highest-ranking competitor nationwide in the year-end standings, including two perfect scores.

More than 39,000 students from 46 states entered in the meets.

Diane Hom supervised the school's participants.


Hospice thanks its volunteers

Hospice Hawai'i has announced this year's volunteer awards.

Honorees include Bonnie Kaanaana, Judy Winner Award for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year; Beth Johnson, Office Volunteer of the Year; and Roy Harano, Patient Care Volunteer of the Year.

Hospice Hawai'i is a community-based nonprofit organization that provides care for people who are terminally ill as well as support services for their families and caregivers.
