Lanikai edges Hui Lanakila in canoe opener

Lanikai Canoe Club's 16-and-younger boys crew celebrates victory at the Clement D. Pa'iaina Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Lanikai also was the regatta's overall champion.

The first phase of the Lanikai Canoe Club's reclamation project was a success yesterday.

Boosted by the return of head coach Bob Puakea, Lanikai won the Clement D. Pa'iaina Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. It was the season opener for the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

OHCRA is the state's largest paddling organization, and more than 1,500 participated in yesterday's regatta.

"It's a nice welcome home," said Puakea, who last coached Lanikai in 1997. "But this is only the first (regatta). Our goal is the state championship."

Puakea coached Lanikai to a state championship in 1996, then resigned a year later to work on canoe-related projects on the Big Island. Lanikai also won the state title in 2000.

"The material is here," Puakea said. "This is not a rebuilding thing because we weren't down. We just want to get back to the top."

Based on yesterday's final results, it's not going to be easy.

Kailua Canoe Club's Novice A team rows to shore after a victory in the Clement D. Pa'iaina Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Kailua won the half-mile race in 4 minutes, 20.08 seconds.

Lanikai finished the 37-race regatta with 73 points and eight race victories.

Hui Lanakila won seven races and finished with 71 — two points short of a historic first victory. Kailua was third with 67 and Outrigger fourth with 48.

'Anuenue scored 17 points to win the A division for smaller clubs. Leeward Kai was second with 12.

"There are so many good teams now," Puakea said. "Every week you have to cross your fingers and hope things go your way."

Yesterday, Lanikai won with a mix of young and old paddlers.

For the past decade, Lanikai's strength has been its open men's divisions. Yesterday, the club's future men started the winning ways.

Lanikai won four boys races: 12-and-younger, 14-and-younger, 15-and-younger and 16-and-younger.

"We had a lot of boys return from last year and then we got a bunch of new ones," said David Daniels, coach of the boys 16-and-younger crew. "It gives us a lot of numbers to work with. The hardest part now is choosing which ones get to race."

The Lanikai men turned in their usual solid performance, winning the sophomore and open-4 races. But compared to previous years, Lanikai's men were not nearly as dominating yesterday.

"What we're trying to do is make the whole club stronger," Puakea said. "Some of the guys who were winning all the races before are getting older, so we're moving them up to the (masters) races."

Daniels, who paddled on the victorious men's sophomore crew, said several key paddlers skipped yesterday's regatta because of other commitments.

"We're only going to get better," he said. "We're still trying to put everything together."

Hui Lanakila edged Lanikai by less than two seconds in the prestigious men's senior race — a 1 1/2-mile sprint that is considered the top division in regattas.

The Hui Lanakila crew: Manny Kulukulualani, Raven Aipa, Mel Puu, Jed Gushman, Sam Alama and Leighton Look. After the first mile, Hui Lanakila trailed Lanikai and Outrigger.

"We just stayed steady down the stretch," Aipa said. "We never panicked. We just maintained what we were doing the whole way and it worked out."

Hui Lanakila's women also worked out well, winning the sophomore and open-4 races.

"We're really pleased with how we did as an overall women's program," said Vi Coito, who steered the women's sophomore crew to victory. "We're trying to be humble, but it's almost like we don't know how to act because Hui Lanakila has never really done this well before in the women's races."

As a result, Hui Lanakila came the closest it has ever come to an overall regatta victory since joining OHCRA in 1977.

"Our goal is to win a regatta this year," head coach Leighton Look said. "Today might have been our chance, but some technicalities didn't go our way."

He was referring to the mixed 55-and-older race. Kailua finished first, but was disqualified for using an unregistered paddler. As a result, Lanikai moved up from second to first — a difference of two points.

"Other things happened during the day, so it's hard to point only at that one race," Look said. "But it hurts when it comes down to something like that."

Kailua still won six races and finished a close third overall.

"Our bread and butter is our women and masters," first-year head coach Jimmy Bruhn said. "If we improve with our kids and our men, we'll be OK."

Hui Nalu placed fifth overall, but won the prestigious women's senior race. The crew of Taryn Dean, Gail Ka'aialii, Julie Aio, Lorey Bode, Patsy Vasquez and Denise Darval-Chang beat Hui Lanakila by four seconds.

Hawaiian streak snapped

• Kihei prevails on Maui: For the first time in a decade, a team other than the Hawaiian Canoe Club won a Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association regatta.

Kihei Canoe Club compiled 107 points to top Hawaiian's 99 during the John M. Lake Regatta on Saturday at Kahului Harbor.

Hawaiian, the two-time defending state champion and 18-time defending Maui champion, had won every Maui regatta since 1994. Napili won a regatta in 1992, and then tied Hawaiian for a regatta title in 1993.

Kihei won 13 of the 39 races in the regatta. Hawaiian won nine races, and suffered five disqualifications for various violations.

Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a

• Two-for-two for Kane'ohe: Led once again by its youth paddlers, the Kane'ohe Canoe Club won the Hale'iwa Regatta yesterday at Hale'iwa Beach Park.

The Kane'ohe kids combined to win eight of the 13 youth races. Kane'ohe has won both Hui Wa'a regattas so far this season.

Kane'ohe finished with 10 race victories and 79 points in the 36-race regatta.

Lokahi placed second for the second consecutive week with 65. Lokahi won five races, including the women's senior race.

Koa Kai won seven races and finished with 54 points to win the AA division for medium-sized clubs. Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i won the men's senior race and placed second in AA with 29 points.

Waikiki Beach Boys won the A division for small clubs with 18 points.
