Cal State Fullerton routs Notre Dame to advance

Dustin Miller scattered nine hits over eight-plus innings, and Jason Corapci and Justin Turners each drove in two runs as Cal State Fullerton advanced to college baseball's super regionals with an 8-1 victory over Notre Dame at Fullerton, Calif.

Miller (8-2) struck out 10 and walked none for Cal State Fullerton (46-13).

Steve Sollmann went 3-for-4 for Notre Dame (45-18), which played in the College World Series last year.

Cal State Fullerton's Kurt Suzuki, a Baldwin (Maui) High alum, went 1-for-4 and scored two runs.

Suzuki and Notre Dame relief pitcher Brandon Viloria, a Maui High graduate, faced off for the first time in a college game yesterday, in the ninth inning. Suzuki reached on an error.

Viloria, a senior, seeing his first regional action in two years, allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one in the ninth inning.

Suzuki, a sophomore catcher, will be the only player from Hawai'i in the eight super regionals.

Fullerton plays Arizona State in the super regional.

Tempe (Ariz.) Regional

• Arizona St. 16, UNLV 1: Jeff Larish homered and drove in three runs to key a 19-hit attack as Arizona State routed UNLV to advance to the super regionals.

Ben Thurmond (7-0) allowed three hits and walked three in five scoreless innings, and Arizona State (53-12) outscored its opponents 45-3 in three regional games. Dennis Wyrick also had three RBIs for the Sun Devils.

Brent Johnson hit an RBI double in the ninth for the Rebels (47-17).


Tallahassee (Fla.) Regional

• Florida St. 12, South Alabama 2: Stephen Drew homered twice and drove in four runs as Florida State hit seven home runs and cruised past South Alabama and advanced to the super regionals.

The win was the second of the day for the Seminoles (54-11-1), who beat the Jaguars 13-5 to force the second game.

Florida State will play defending national champion Texas in the super regionals.

South Alabama finished 42-19.


Austin (Texas) Regional

• Texas 6, Lamar 3: Dustin Majewski went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Taylor Teagarden hit a two-run single to lead defending national champion Texas over Lamar and into the super regionals.

After Texas (41-17) fell behind 3-2, Huston Street hit an RBI double in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run on Majewski's single. Omar Quintanilla scored later in the inning when shortstop Jeremy Gray missed Eric Sultemeier's line drive.

Earlier yesterday, Lamar (40-18) defeated Texas, 6-2, to force the final game.


Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional

• Miami 13, Florida 10: Ryan Braun tripled, doubled twice and scored three runs as Miami defeated Florida to advance to the super regionals.

Miami (42-15-1), which extended its NCAA record by winning a regional for the 10th straight year, will play North Carolina State in next weekend's super regional.

Ben Harrison and Mario Garza each had three hits and two RBIs for the Gators (37-21-1).

Earlier yesterday, Florida beat Miami, 15-5, to force a second game.


Wilson (N.C.) Regional

• N.C. State 6, Western Carolina 4: Colt Morton homered in the top of the 14th and Joe Gaetti scored an insurance run on a wild pitch as North Carolina State advanced to the super regionals with a victory over Western Carolina.

Matt Camp went 3-for-6 with three RBIs for the Wolfpack (45-16). The Catamounts finished 43-21.


Houston Regional

• Rice 5, Wichita St. 2: Wade Townsend spaced five hits over eight innings, and Craig Stansberry hit a two-run single to lead Rice to the super regionals with a victory over Wichita State.

Ryan Bell hit his first home run of the season for Wichita State (48-27).

Rice (51-10) will play Houston in the super regional.


College Station (Tex.) Regional

• Houston 7, Texas A&M 6: Brian Martin scored the winning run on a throwing error by reliever Matt Farnum as Houston (36-28) rallied past Texas A&M (45-19).

Earlier yesterday, Eyung Cho hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh as Houston forced an elimination game with a 7-6 victory.


Auburn (Ala.) Regional

• Ohio State 9, Auburn 7: Brett Garrard drove in four runs and Matt Davis pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth as Ohio State advanced to the super regionals for the first time since 1999.

Drew Anderson had two doubles as the Buckeyes (44-19) beat Auburn (42-21).

Ohio State will play Southwest Missouri State in the next round.


Lincoln (Neb.) Regional

• SW Missouri St. 7, Nebraska 0: Bob Zimmermann scattered five hits and struck out seven in the first complete game of his career, and Southwest Missouri State (38-24) beat Nebraska to advance to the super regionals for the first time.

The Cornhuskers, who forced a final game with a 9-5 win earlier yesterday, finished 47-18.


Hattiesburg (Miss.) Regional

• Baylor 3, Southern Mississippi 2: David Murphy hit a game-tying two-run double and Josh Ford followed with an RBI single as Baylor rallied with three runs in the eighth and beat Southern Mississippi to win the regional.

The Bears (44-21) will play Louisiana State in the super regionals.

Southern Miss (47-16) led 2-0 going into the eighth, but starter Anthony DeWitt came out with an elbow injury and the Bears scored three times against Austin Tubb.


Baton Rouge (La.) Regional

• LSU 9, NC-Wilmington 8: Jon Zeringue hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 11th as Louisiana State edged North Carolina-Wilmington and advanced to the super regionals.

Ryan Patterson also homered and Aaron Hill had three RBIs for the Tigers (43-19-1).

NC-Wilmington finished 40-23.


Starkville (Miss.) Regional

• North Carolina 8, Mississippi St 6: Sean Farrell tied it with a two-run homer in the ninth and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the 11th as North Carolina advanced to the super regionals.

Farrell was 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead the Tar Heels (42-21).

The Tar Heels will play South Carolina in the super regional.

Mississippi State finished 42-20.


Atlanta Regional

• South Carolina 9, Stetson 3: Steven Tolleson and Justin Harris each had three hits, and Steven Bondurant scattered eight hits over seven innings as South Carolina beat Stetson to advance to the super regionals for the fourth straight year.

The Gamecocks (42-20) won three straight at the regional.

The Hatters finished 41-24.


Long Beach (Calif.) Regional

• Long Beach St. 7, Washington 2: Todd Jennings drove in three runs and Cesar Ramos pitched seven shutout innings as Long Beach State beat Washington and advanced to the super regionals for the first time.

The 49ers (41-18) take on Stanford next weekend. The Huskies finished 42-18.


Stanford (Calif.) Regional

• Stanford 19, Richmond 6: Ryan Garko homered twice and drove in five runs, and Danny Putnam hit a grand slam as Stanford (44-15) routed Richmond (48-15) and won its fifth straight regional.

Carlos Quentin also homered and Mark Romanczuk (11-0) tied a Stanford freshman record for most victories without a loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 6á innings. Stanford (44-15) has won 16 of its last 17.
