Wai'anae's Calvin Uyechi, the OIA West Player of the Year, hit .522, and played third base when he wasn't compiling a 3-1 pitching record.

Wai'anae High School senior Calvin Uyechi plans to study pharmacy at Creighton University starting in the fall.

But during the past O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division season, Uyechi was the one dishing out the headaches for opposing teams on the mound and at the plate.

Uyechi, a third baseman/pitcher, was named OIA West Player of the Year in a vote of division coaches.

He batted .522 with seven doubles and 12 RBIs, along with nine runs scored. As a pitcher, he went 3-1 with a 2.24 earned-run average, with 23 strikeouts and five walks in 25 innings.

But more than that, Uyechi was a leader for the Seariders, who finished 8-2 and second in the West.

"His hard work and great attitude is what made him," Wai'anae coach Kekoa Kaluhiokalani said. Uyechi is joined on the OIA West first team by classmate Chevy Teves, who made it as a utility player.

Teves went 2-0 as a pitcher with 19 strikeouts and four walks in 14 innings, with an ERA of 2.00. He also batted .444.

West champion 'Aiea led the way with five first-team selections: junior first baseman Kepa Wong, senior second baseman Taylor Watanabe, senior outfielder Chase Kaiuwailani, junior catcher Aaron Asher and junior pitcher Blaze Moleta.

Wong batted .548 with three home runs and 14 RBIs, Watanabe hit .417 with two homers and 11 RBIs, Asher batted .500 with two home runs and 11 RBIs and Kaiuwailani hit .280. Moleta went 4-0 with a 0.91 ERA, including a one-hitter against Wai'anae.

Others making the first team are Leilehua junior shortstop Spencer Omalza, Mililani senior outfielder Chris Balatico, Campbell senior outfielder Bill Tennent and sophomore pitcher Tristan Bailey, and Nanakuli senior designated hitter Ikaika Asinsin.

'Aiea's Ryan Kato was named Coach of the Year after guiding Na Ali'i to a 10-0 regular-season record.
