'Ice' discovered in prison lockdown

Residue in a glass pipe confiscated during a search of Halawa Correctional Facility turned out to be crystal methamphetamine, warden Clayton Frank said yesterday.

The pipe was discovered at the beginning of a two-day lockdown last month at the Halawa prison.

A 32-year-old inmate was arrested in the incident and likely will face a misconduct hearing and the possibility of additional prison time, Frank said.


Embezzler gets prison sentence

A former Schofield Federal Credit Union employee who stole more than $500,000 from her employer was sentenced to serve two years and four months in a federal prison, U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo said Monday.

Charlene M. Renteria, 33, was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway to pay $561,550 in restitution for the bank fraud conviction.

As operations supervisor at the credit union, Renteria was able to open as many as 36 fictitious accounts in 1998-2002 and steal $564,000, Kubo said. Renteria pleaded guilty to the charges.


Waipahu crash victim identified

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified the man killed Friday night in a traffic accident on H-1 Freeway in Waipahu as Randall Perkins, 43.

Perkins' 1986 Ford Explorer crashed near the Military Access Road overpass.
