UH women sailors slip to seventh at nationals

The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's sailing team dropped one spot to seventh after the second day of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association 2003 Spring Championships yesterday at Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.

Hawai'i has 182 points in the A and B divisions. Tufts University continues to lead the 18-team competition with a best low score of 108. In sailing, teams are awarded one point for a first-place finish, two points for second, etc.

Hawai'i skipper Jennifer Warnock and crew Sarah Reed posted 96 points in A division after 14 races. In B division, Hawai'i skipper Renee DeCurtis and crew Sarah Hitchcock recorded 86 points in 12 races.

The competition concludes today.



TENNIS

Hawai'i teams win in Virginia: Two Hawai'i tennis teams won gold medals at the 2003 Summer National Senior Games in Newport News, VA.

Kathleen Anderson and Patrick Low won the mixed doubles championship in the 50-54 age division and Jane Pang and Michael Kubo captured the 55-59 title. Karen Hastings and Jane Pang took silver in the 55-59 women's doubles.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

• Poppinga, Harrer prevail: Karrie Poppinga and Janice Harrer took time off from being moms to win the Eyecatcher Associated Volleyball Professionals Next Open at Queen's Beach last Saturday.

Poppinga, a former University of Hawai'i All-American, and Harrer, a former Chaminade coach, beat touring pros Tanya Fuamatu and Heidi Illustre, 25-22, in the final of the daylong event. Illustre also played for UH while Fuamatu played for UH-Hilo.

UH's Lily Kahumoku teamed with Lia Young to finish tied for third with former Rainbow Wahine Angelica Ljungquist and Annika Granstrom.



SOCCER

Hawai'i reaps AYSO honors: Hawai'i took two of the top three awards at the American Youth Soccer Association National Convention in May.

Hawai'i was named Section of the Year out of 14 sections, and Honolulu Region 178 was also honored, receiving the top region award out of 1,300 regions nationwide.



HONORS

QB Club: Brigham Young-Hawai'i tennis coach Dave Porter and the Seasiders' top women's player, Adrienn Hegedus, were named the Honolulu Quarterback Club's Sportspersons of the Month for May.

BYUH's men's and women's teams, coached by Porter, won their second consecutive NCAA II titles last month. 

Hegedus, a sophomore from Zrinyi Utca, Hungary, led the Seasiders to the title with a 38-1 record at No. 1 singles and 26-4 mark at No. 1 doubles.
