'Kisses' stars try out surf and turf specials

PARADISE ALLEY: Actor Rob Schneider, in town for "50 First Kisses" filming, must truly enjoy Nick's Fishmarket; he and his mom dined there three times last week. Schneider has a 1969 softball team T-shirt (Nick's was a sponsor) and promised to bring it in to show Ben Dowling, Nick's vice president. ...

"Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" co-stars Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore (also in "50 First Kisses") went scuba diving recently aboard the Sea Hawai'i, with dive instructor Lyle Kleusch. Diaz is an experienced diver, Barrymore a novice; both enjoyed the private dive. ...

Out Maui way, Teri Hatcher, Amy J. Carle and Starla Benford wound up a week's run of "The Vagina Monologues" at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center with a closing-night wrap party at Mañana Garage in Kahului. ...

RANDOM NOTES: Jimmy Borges (whose birthday was June 1) had multiple celebrations. On stage from the Blaisdell Concert Hall, singer Michael McDonald sent birthday greetings to Borges last Saturday night; on Sunday, at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider brunch, the party continued with a get-together hosted by Carolyn Berry, at which McDonald sang a Buck Owens country tune, Vicky Cayetano sang "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" with Borges, and Matt Catingub got in his vocal licks with "Waikiki." No wonder Borges remains youthful in looks and in spirit. ...

At Brew Moon this month, the Loretta Ables Sayre Trio appears June 13; Joy & the Four Fathers share the limelight June 14 with Jordan Segundo; Sonya Mendez & Chica Tropica are on June 20; Chant performs June 28. ...

Add-ons: Cecilio & Kapono have added a Sunday performance to their "Lifetime Party" 30th anniversary hoopla tomorrow and Saturday, with Kalapana and fireworks adding allure; the Sunday show will be without Kalapana and the aerial display ... HERE 'N' THERE: Georja Skinner, through her Skinner Entertainment, a Maui-based management and production firm, has landed a big fish — long overdue recognition for television inventor Philo T. Farnsworth and his pivotal role in changing our world. Skinner helped bring Emmy recognition to Farnsworth and his wife and collaborator, Elma Pem Farnsworth (often called the "mother of television" because of her devoted work with her husband), and was successful in lobbying for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to name an award for the unsung hero. Thus, the Farnsworth Emmy Award has been created to honor technical innovation. ...

Don Brown, who runs the Art House at Restaurant Row, is back from the Seattle Film Festival and raves about "Whale Rider," a New Zealand film that earned hurrahs and a standing ovation. The film receives its Hawai'i premiere at next week's Maui Film Festival. "Trying like heck to get it at our theater," said Brown, who met the young star of the film, Keisha Castle-Hughes, planeside in New Zealand. ...

Michael Doherty and Don Harris, the "X2" sequel writers who were here recently with director Bryan Singer, are contemplating a Charlie Chan project for a new generation of fans. Wouldn't it be proper to film it here?. ...
