Programs offered to young readers

State libraries are gearing up for summer with two free programs aimed at young readers. The programs run from June 9 to July 12 at the state's 50 public libraries.

• "Find Adventure @ Your Library" is for readers in preschool to sixth grade and adults who read to their young children.

The program begins with the reading of "Sinbad!" to coincide with the opening of the animated film "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" on July 2.

• "Summer Reading — Island Style" is aimed at middle and high schoolers. Participants can enter for a chance to win various prizes, including a $1,000 shopping spree at Pearlridge Center.

The purpose of the programs is to get children and teens to build their reading habits by visiting the library weekly and reading at least one book a week.

Partnership to help scholarships, more

The University of Hawai'i College of Engineering, the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies and Siemens Building Technologies Inc. have formed a three-year partnership that will put more than $200,000 into student scholarships and other programs designed to bring more Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island students into engineering and the sciences.

Siemens' commitment to UH-Manoa is part of a $1 million investment the company is making in the Pacific Alliance, the largest in the company's 156-year history. Siemens is a mechanical and electrical control systems company based in Europe.
