Two teachers receive award

Ignacio Arcas of Maui High School and Cindy Mochida of Mililani High School were awarded the Heald College Excellence in Career Education Teaching Award at a reception at Heald's Honolulu campus.

This student-nominated award recognizes high school teachers who have contributed to the growth of career education and have made a positive impact on their students' lives.


Achievements recognized

Several individuals and teams at Saint Louis High School have been recognized for outstanding academic or extracurricular performances this semester, including:

  • The debate team was named the Hawai'i State Forensics Champions in the Ted Turner debate category. Senior Jonathan Dang ('03) and Junior Forrest Richmond ('04) will represent Hawai'i at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., this summer.
  • Senior Garrett Leopardi has received $22,000 in college scholarships, including: the Shui Sang and Cecilia Lee Scholarship for $1,000; the Saint Louis Alumni Academic Scholarship for $1,000; and $20,000 from Gonzaga University.
  • Senior Wilson Afoa has received the Lumana'i $1,000 Scholarship Award for academics and Samoan Ancestry.
  • Senior Mark Blackmon has received the Dr. William W. L. Ahana Scholarship worth $1,000.
  • Senior Rayson Kong has received the Harold K.H. and Thelma K.T. Choy Scholarship for $500.


Advocacy group names directors

People Attentive to Children announced its 2003 officers and board of directors, including: Nalani Matsuo, president; Sherri Aoyama, vice president; William Kern, secretary; and Leona Seto-Mook, treasurer. The board of directors includes Olinda Aiwohi, Gaynel Buxton, Barbara Essman, Liuone Faagai, Earl Inouye, Natalie Ichimura Kiehm, Estelle Iwamura, Steven Kim, Vicky Kometani, Susan Arinaga Li, Rae Loui, Russell Lum, Shawn Nakamoto, Faith Rex, Tamara Rollins and Alan Saka.

PATCH is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality and availability of childcare in Hawai'i.
