Carl English is not coming back for his senior season.
English, who is participating in the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Chicago this week, said yesterday that he is "100 percent sure" that he will take his basketball skills to the professional level.
"This is what I want to do," said English, a 6-foot-5 guard. "I accomplished one of my goals of finishing (college), now I want to get to another goal."
English has not yet signed with an agent, but said he will begin searching for one after the conclusion of the Pre-Draft camp tomorrow.
English had a favorable showing at the camp yesterday, amassing 13 points, three rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes of a 40-minute scrimmage. He said he primarily went up against Jason Gardner of Arizona and Ebi Ere of Oklahoma.
"I think I more than held my own against those guys," he said. "I just have to keep it up for two more days."
English also fared well in the strength/flexibility tests yesterday. He did 11 bench-press repetitions of 185 pounds and touched 11 feet, 3 inches on his vertical jump.
His announcement yesterday brought a close to one of the most productive, popular and interesting chapters in UH basketball.
After a harsh-and-humble upbringing in Patrick's Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, English became a bona fide star at UH.
He leaves as the No. 7 scorer in school history with 1,259 points. As a junior last season, he averaged 19.6 points and set a UH record with 89 3-pointers.
English, who earned his bachelor's degree last month, declared for early entry into the draft, which will be held June 26.
