Hilo man dies in car accident

HILO, Hawai'i — A 26-year-old Hilo man died yesterday following a one-car crash on Hawai'i Belt Road near Hakalau.

Kyle Fukamizu was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center. Police said Fukamizu was driving his 2002 Subaru sedan north near the Hakalau overpass just before 3 a.m. when he crossed the center line and struck a concrete pillar near the Old Mamalahoa Highway intersection.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call police officer Norbert Serrao at (808) 961-2232.

There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year, the same number at this time last year.



Pedestrian killed was from Waipahu

The pedestrian who died May 21 after being struck by a pickup truck in Mapunapuna was identified yesterday by the medical examiner's office as Cyrus Geniblaza of Waipahu. Police said Geniblaza, 77, was not in a crosswalk.



Four charged in Kalihi drug busts

Four people who reside in two Hikina Lane apartments in Kalihi raided by police on Wednesday are facing state charges in connection with dealing and using crystal methamphetamine.

Alex E. Ababa, 41, and his girlfriend, Fe N. Reyes, 38, who live at 940-B Hikina Lane are being held in lieu of $50,000 bail apiece. Each is charged with one count of first-degree and two counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia. Police seized more than 3 ounces of crystal meth from a safe in their apartment.

Jacqueline Asuncion, 58, and Raymond G. Cabral, 49, who live at 940-A Hikina Lane are each charged with third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Preliminary hearings are scheduled Monday at District Court for the four suspects.

Kalihi police arrested six others on federal warrants, charging them with dealing drugs within Kalihi's Weed & Seed District. One other indicted suspect remains at large on the Mainland. In addition, two other men have been charged with allegedly selling crystal meth to undercover officers.



Singer charged in attempted murder

A recording artist accused of firing shots at a former University of Hawai'i football player was indicted by an O'ahu grand jury on four criminal counts, including second-degree attempted murder.

The indictment against Aziel Al Toeaina, 25, was returned yesterday, alleging the singer attempted tried to kill Tupu Alualu during a parking lot confrontation at Ala Moana Center on May 16.

Toeaina is alleged to have aimed a gun at Alualu's chest and pulled the trigger. The handgun misfired.



Two men arrested in armed robberies

Police have arrested two men, ages 35 and 27, in connection with separate armed robberies in Kalihi.

The older man was arrested Wednesday at 2260 Kamehameha Highway at 8 a.m., about four hours after a 26-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint in front of his Kalihi Street residence.

Police yesterday arrested the 27-year-old man in connection with an 11:45 p.m. robbery last night on Democrat Street. A knife was used in that robbery.
