Semifinal matchups set for Manoa Cup

No. 44-seed Brandon Abreu, 17, defeated No. 13 Kristofer Baptist, 1-up, in the quarterfinals of the Manoa Cup at the O'ahu Country Club.

In other quarterfinal matches, Damien Memorial High junior Kurt Nino (No. 25) defeated Ryan Perez (No. 17), 4 and 3; University of Hawai'i-Manoa sophomore Kellen-Floyd Asao (No. 2) beat Casey Watabu (No. 10), 3 and 2; and UH-Hilo's Kellan Anderson (No. 11) defeated Burt Bonk (No. 19), 1-up.

The 36-hole semifinal of the state amateur match-play championship begin this morning at 7 and 11 a.m., with Nino facing Abreu. Asao and Anderson tee off at 7:06 and 11:06 a.m.

Tomorrow's 36-hole final begins at 7 a.m.

SAILING

UH in championship round: The University of Hawai'i sailing team advanced to today's championship round in the team race competition at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association 2003 Spring Championships at Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.

The Rainbows finished yesterday's round-robin first round with a 3-3 record and went 1-1 in a sail-off to advance.

Hawai'i's Bryan Lake, Joey Pasquali and Matthew Stine served as skippers and Jennifer Warnock, Sarah Hitchcock and Kathryn Jackson served as crews.

Yesterday, Warnock was named to the 2003 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association/Ronstan Women's Honorable Mention All-American team.

SOCCER

• Pacific Cup begins today: The Pacific Cup Soccer Tournament begins at 4:30 p.m. today at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The men's and women's tournaments will feature 22 teams in four divisions.

Play continues tomorrow and Sunday with games starting at 9 a.m.
