Surf 'n Sea series early deadline is today

Swimmers planning to compete in all four Surf 'n Sea North Shore Swim Series races need to register by today for the early entry fee of $80.

Otherwise, the cost is $100 ($25 per race). Walkups are invited.

The series begins June 28 with the Raging Isle Sprint, a one-miler from Sunset Beach to Pipeline. The Surf 'n Sea Cup on July 12, also a mile, is at Hale'iwa Beach Park. The series then goes to Waimea Bay on July 26 for the Cholos 2000 (meter) Swim and culminates Aug. 9 with the Surf 'n Sea North Shore Challenge, a 2.3-mile swim, which starts at Pipeline and ends at Waimea Bay.

Rick Heltzel, the National Open Water Swim champion in the 5- and 10-kilometer distances, and Jennifer Baker will defend their respective series titles.

The men's field also will include Punahou student Noa Sakamoto, a member of the 2003 U.S. National Junior Team and the state high school champion in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.

The women's field also includes Kalaheo student Christine Phillips, the girls state champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle who also has 15 age-group state championships.

CYCLING

• Tantalus race: The 24-Hour Bike Race on Tantalus, which begins June 14 and ends 24 hours later on June 15, with both start and finish at the Hawai'i Nature Center, is for both solo and team riders.

The cost is $30 per member of teams or $40 for solo riders. There is also a $5 USCF license fee, and a $10 late fee after June 11, the deadline to enter.

• Bulls camp: The Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club is holding six Super Summer Camps, ideal for newcomers and novice players. The camps will be at Kapi'olani Park, beginning June 16.

The Bulls are also holding tryouts for experienced players, ages 7-19, during early June.
