China, U.S. advance to volleyball semifinals

Ruirui Zhao and Jinling Chu each scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as China edged the USA women's national volleyball team in five games yesterday on the final day of pool play at the Montreux Volley Masters in Montreux, Switzerland.
With its 25-27, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25, 16-14 win, China finished pool play with a perfect 3-0 mark and clinched the top seed from Pool B. Team USA, No. 3 in the world, wrapped up pool play at 2-1.
Both teams advanced to the championship semifinals starting today. As the No. 1 team from Pool B, China will play the No. 2 team from Pool A, Brazil, in one semifinal. In the other championship semifinal, the No. 1 team from Pool A, Russia, will meet the United States.
"This tournament has been a good start for the qualifying year," said U.S. middle blocker Heather Bown, a former University of Hawai'i All-American. "We fought hard tonight and showed a lot for being a team that's only been together for a week or two."
GOLF
Anamizu qualifies: Phillip Anamizu had five birdies and shot a 1-over-par 73 at Mid-Pacific Country Club yesterday to earn Hawai'i's qualifying spot in this year's U.S. Senior Open.
The national tournament will be June 26-29 at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Larry Stubblefield is first alternate and Daniel Nishimoto second alternate. Both shot 74. There were 17 golfers going for the one spot.
OBITUARY
Scrimshaw service tomorrow: A memorial service for Wayne Scrimshaw, who died May 26 after a bicycle accident during the Keauhou Kona Triathlon, will be tomorrow at the Keoua O Honaunau Canoe Club Halau, just north of the Place of Refuge in South Kona.
The gathering will begin at 8 a.m., with the memorial and scattering of the ashes at 9 a.m.
Scrimshaw, 48, is survived by wife, Shelly Zabedee, of Kailua, Kona, and parents, Finley and Barbara, brother, Lee, and sister, Bonnie Briscoe, all of Ontario, Canada.
SAILING
UH finishes in 8th: The University of Hawai'i finished eighth in the team race competition at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association 2003 Spring Championships yesterday at Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.
The Rainbows posted a 2-5 record in yesterday's championship round-robin and failed to advance to today's final four-team, double round-robin.
The fourth-ranked Hawai'i coed team will compete in the ICSA North American Dinghy Championships tomorrow. Hawai'i finished sixth in the women's competition Wednesday.
