WASHINGTON — Here are some actions in Congress last week.

Key House votes

1. Flag burning

For the fifth time in eight years, the House approved a constitutional amendment, 300-125, to ban burning the U.S. flag and sent it to an uncertain fate in the Senate. Eighty-six Democrats joined the Republican majority in passing the proposal. Eleven GOP members voted against the amendment.

Hawai'i votes: Neil Abercrombie (D) NAY; Ed Case (D) NAY

2. "Partial-birth" abortion

The House voted 282-139 to ban a procedure opponents call "partial-birth" abortion. Sixty-two Democrats voted with most Republicans to pass the measure. The Senate approved a similar ban in March.

Key Senate votes

1. Base closings

The Senate rejected a proposal to cancel the 2005 round of military base closings. The amendment to the defense authorization bill received 42 yes votes to cancel the next round and 53 no votes to go ahead with the 2005 round.

Hawai'i votes: Daniel Akaka (D) NAY; Dan Inouye (D) YEA

2. Ethanol

The Senate voted 68-28 to require gasoline refiners to double their use of corn-based ethanol and banned the use of MTBE, a gasoline additive that has polluted groundwater.
