Pair airlifted from 'Ohe'o

Rescue crews airlifted two people from the pools of 'Ohe'o in Haleakala National Park yesterday after a man hurt his back jumping and a woman broke her leg trying to get a better look at his rescue.

The 18-year-old man injured his back after jumping 60 feet from a ledge into one of the pools, often called the Seven Sacred Pools, on the makai side. Air One, Rescue 10, Engine 7 and the National Park Service were called, and the man had to be placed in a basket and airlifted to avoid further injury, said Assistant Fire Chief Gordon Cordeiro.

A 47-year-old tourist was injured and had to be airlifted when she slipped trying to watch the rescue scene, Cordeiro said.

Such accidents are common at the pools, Cordeiro said.

"Youth was involved in this accident," he said, "although there's also a lot of older people who think they are young and get injured too."

Three injured in Maui crash

Police are investigating the cause of a head-on collision yesterday on the Haleakala Highway on Maui that left three people with serious injuries.

An 18-year-old driving a 1989 Nissan toward Kahului crossed the center lane around midnight and hit a 2003 Ford Van driven by a 44-year-old man traveling toward Pukalani.

The younger driver was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The other driver and his passenger were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where they were listed in fair condition.

Charges sought in home burglary

Police are seeking to press charges against a 24-year-old man they say was caught burglarizing a Honolulu home Saturday.

A 48-year-old man called police shortly after midnight, saying he had come home to find an unfamiliar moped parked in his driveway and a stranger running out of his home. The man, confronted, dropped some belongings taken from the home, he said.

The resident said he and a passing motorist detained the man until police arrived.

Police said the man would be charged with burglary, second-degree robbery, promoting a dangerous drug and credit card theft.

Man may face assault charges

Police are seeking assault charges against a 40-year-old man who bit off the tip of his neighbor's finger Saturday after an argument.

They said he became angry after his neighbor asked him to move one of his guest's cars. He attempted to hit the neighbor with a baseball bat, ended up wrestling with him and bit off the man's finger, police said.

The victim was taken to Wahiawa General, where he was in good condition.
