THE LEFT LANE
'Matrix': High-tech action, and deep, too

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Who says you can't get deep in the multiplex? "The Matrix" is winning raves for its action sequences and its ideas, says Greg Garrett, co-author with Chris Seay of "The Gospel Reloaded: Exploring Spirituality and Faith in the Matrix" (Pinon Press, $13.99). The first film "brought faith issues in front of a whole generation that for the most part isn't interested in traditional church," says Garrett, a professor of English at Baylor University, who uses "The Matrix" in his classes. These movies "call us to seek and find — to ask of our own lives what's real and what's a mirage."

What the movies reflect is a mix of Buddhism, Christianity, Zen, existentialism, Gnosticism, Platonic philosophy and Derrida, he says. (And the Web site for the new movie, www.whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com, even has a "Philosophy" section.)

Celebrating Gay Pride

The Gay Pride celebration is coming up, with a festive round of activities, including contests, a parade, a lu'au and a dance. "Strength of 'Ohana" is this year's theme. The four major events, held over three days, are:

  • Mr., Miss and Ms. Gay Pride Concert, 6 to 11 p.m. June 26 at Fusion Waikiki. $10 donation suggested.
  • Honolulu Pride Lu'au, from 5 to 9 p.m. June 27, McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park. $30 ($25 in advance).
  • Honolulu Gay Pride Parade, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 28, from Ala Moana Park to Kapi'olani Park, via Ala Moana and Kalakaua Avenue. Free.
  • Honolulu Pride Festival and Dance, from noon to 9 p.m. June 28, McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park. $3 donation suggested.

From Jiro to Sensei

Ban Daisuke, best known as Jiro, the "Kikaida" hero, will portray the Sensei, mentor to two samurai heroes, in Aaron Yamasato's "Blood of the Samurai" TV series, in production this summer. "Ban Daisuke joining our cast is a true blessing for the project," said Yamasato. "He is a true icon to a generation of Hawai'i's citizens, including myself."

Oceanic Cable 16 has acquired the rights to air the "Samurai" series, a six-episode martial arts action adventure. Airings will begin this winter, said Yamasato.
