Kane'ohe makes it three in a row

The Kane'ohe kids made a difference again.

Youth paddlers helped Kane'ohe Canoe Club cruise to its third straight Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a win of the season in as many tries yesterday in the Lokahi Canoe Club Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Kane'ohe finished with 86 points in the AAA Division — for clubs that enter more than 18 races — and Lokahi was second, 30 points behind. Manu O Ke Kai finished third with 40 points, followed by Waikiki Yacht Club with 32.
Kane'ohe head coach Clint Anderson runs the dominant youth program that won seven races yesterday — boys 12-and-younger, boys and girls 13-and-younger, boys 15-and-younger, boys 16-and-younger and girls and boys 18-and-younger.
After winning three of the first seven events — all youth races — Kane'ohe took an early lead over Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i, 26-14. After the completion of the youth races, Kane'ohe led Lokahi, 65-33.
"They are working the kids hard to make sure that they reach their performance goals every week," said Junior Parrilla, an assistant coach for Kane'ohe. "It's a good feeling but we know we have our work cut out for us every week."
Parrilla added that the adult program is coming together as well. Kane'ohe won three adult-division races — men's sophomore, the 40-and-older mixed masters and the 45-and-older mixed masters — to complement its youth success.
Kane'ohe began last season the same way, winning the first three regattas before finishing the Hui Wa'a season second behind Lokahi, the three-time defending champions. "Lokahi is the club everybody is shooting for and you still have other clubs with excellent adult programs," Parrilla said.
One of Lokahi's biggest successes was its women's senior team, which won for the 49th straight time in Hui Wa'a competition yesterday. The Lokahi women still have four of the original six women that started the streak — Jennifer Thompson, Iwa Bush, Mikala Bradley and Ginger Lockette.
"We have good years and bad years but some how we always pull out the win," said Thompson, an advertising director. "This season happens to be a really good year because our times are fast for this early in the season."

With such an impressive winning streak, Thompson said most of the pressure "is internal. We're always chasing after a certain time."
Koa Kai in the canoe Kalehuawehe finished ahead of Lokahi in Ho'okela in the men's novice A race at the Lokahi Canoe Club Regatta at Ke'ehi Lagoon. Koa Kai finished in 7 minutes, 57.12 seconds with Lokahi less than a second behind.
Lokahi also won seven other races — boys 14-and-younger, women's novice A, women's freshmen, men's freshmen, women's sophomore, men's 50-and-older masters and women's open-4 — but it was not enough.
"Kane'ohe's kids again," Lokahi head coach Robert Viernes said. "Mistakes just killed us today, too."
Lokahi lost 15 points for three non-racing infractions. "It wasn't even paddlers, it was boat holders."
Viernes added it was an emotional day because the regatta was dedicated to his mother, Julia, who died in November.
Koa Kai scored 41 points to win the AA division, for clubs that enter nine to 17 events. Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i was second with 30 points. Koa Kai won four races — mixed novice B, men's novice B, men's novice A and men's open-4. Ka Mo'i won the girls 12-and-younger event.
The A division went to Waikiki Beach Boys with 8 points, followed by I Mua with 2. Waikiki Beach Boys won the women's novice B division.
O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association
• Host Kailua wins: The Kailua Canoe Club dominated on its home waters to win the King Kamehameha Regatta yesterday at Kailua Beach.
It was the second regatta of the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association season. It was also Kailua's first regatta victory in two years.
Kailua won 10 races, and finished with 86 points. Hui Lanakila won seven races and finished second for the second consecutive week with 69 points.
Hui Nalu was third with 64, and Lanikai, which won the season-opening regatta last week, was fourth with 61.
Waikiki Surf Club scored 21 points to win the A division for smaller clubs.
Among Kailua's race victories was a sweep of the 55-and-older divisions (men, women and mixed). The Kailua open women also played a key role, winning the sophomore, junior and open-4 races.
Hui Nalu won the prestigious women's senior race, while Lanikai took the men's senior race.
