UH coed sailing team fourth at nationals

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team was in fourth place after the first day of the ICSA North American Coed Dinghy Championships in Detroit.

St. Mary's led with 46 points, followed by Harvard (59), Tufts (59), and Hawai'i (61).

The A-Division team of Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock was in sixth place after six races with 41 points, while the B-Division team of Joey Pasquali and Sarah Hitchcock was in second after four races with 20 points.

The championships continue today and tomorrow.


GOLF

• Ota qualifies: Jonathan Ota of Lihu'e shot a 2-under-par 70 and finished at 144 to win the Kaua'i sectional of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Qualifier on Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.

Ota will represent Kaua'i at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Nationals on July 14-19 in Atlantic City, N.J.

First alternate Juston Thomas shot an even-par 72 to finish a shot back at 145, followed by second-alternate Casey Watabu (73-75-148) and Pat Viernes (80-75-155).

Ota finished 12th at the Mid-Pacific Open in April and tied for fourth at the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship in March.


• Senior Women qualifier: The local qualifier for the United States Golf Association Senior Women's Amateur Championship will be held at Honolulu Country Club on Aug. 12.

It is one of 20 national qualifying sites for the championship, which will be at Barton Creek Resort and Club in Austin, Texas, Sept. 6-11.

The entry fee is $100, due by July 23. Eligibility includes reaching your 50th birthday by Sept. 6, 2003, an up-to-date USGA Handicap index not exceeding 18.4, and amateur status conforming to USGA Rules of Golf.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

• Female clinic for Kaiser members: Sports Performax, a class for females 13 to 19 primarily designed to reduce sports related injuries, still has some spots available.

Female athletes are two to eight times more likely to tear their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the major stabilizer of the knee, than males, according to medical research.

Sports Performax, run by physical therapist Marc Iyomosa, teaches plyometric jump training, strength training and sports specific exercises.

Only Kaiser Permanente members are eligible for the clinic.

The next class begins June 18 and runs for six weeks, meeting Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 4 to 6 p.m.

ALOHA STATE GAMES

• Games begin: The Aloha State Games open Saturday with action and bull's-eye pistol and fencing competitions.

Approximately 3,000 Hawai'i residents are expected to participate in the games, which include Olympic-style competition in 35 sports.

Action and bull's-eye pistol will be at the Koko Head Range, and fencing at the Ala Wai Golf Course's clubhouse.

VOLLEYBALL

• Brazil beats U.S.: Valeska Menezes scored a match-high 17 points and Raquel Silva added 16 to lead Brazil to a 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 victory over the United States women's national team in the third-place match of the Montreux Volley Masters in Switzerland.

Menezes had 12 kills, four blocks and one ace. Silva added 16 kills.

China won the championship with a 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 win over 2002 champion Russia.

U.S. setter Lindsey Berg (Honolulu/University of Minnesota) finished the tournament sixth in assists per game (7.10).

Heather Bown, a University of Hawai'i alum, is also on the U.S. national team.


TENNIS

• Arnoult to write diary: Kula's Beth Arnoult is writing a daily diary for the USTA (usta.com) while she competes in the Polish Open and Invacare World Team Cup this month. The 2003 USA Tennis High Performance Wheelchair Team also includes Kane'ohe's John Greer.

The United States is seeded second behind The Netherlands in Invacare's men's and women's brackets.

Arnoult and Greer are ranked 19th in the world in singles. Arnoult is 12th in doubles and Greer 16th.
