Crash hurts 2, closes highway in La'ie

Advertiser Staff

A single-car accident in La'ie yesterday injured two people and closed a portion of Kamehameha Highway for nearly seven hours.

A 47-year-old Waihe'e man was trying to pass a vehicle on his left when he lost control of his 2002 Chevy Tahoe, said Sgt. Alan Vegas of the Honolulu Police Department's traffic division. Vegas said speed was a factor in the 9:40 p.m. crash near Naniloa Loop.

The car hit a curb and rock wall and overturned, ejecting the driver and a 49-year-old woman from Waihe'e.

Both were taken to Queen's Medical Center, where the driver was listed in critical condition; his passenger was in guarded condition.

The accident closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions. Traffic was rerouted to Naniloa Loop on the La'ie side and turned around at the La'ie Corporation Yard on the Kahuku side. It reopened at 3:10 a.m.
