THE LEFT LANE
Doris theater gets tweaked

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The Honolulu Academy of Arts has tweaked the name of its remodeled theater facility; it's now the Doris Duke Theater at the Academy, with the addition of "theater" to the name.

The art museum also has increased the parking fee for patrons who use the lot behind the Academy Art Center. The new $2 fee, effective last week, is good for up to four hours, an hour longer than before.

Daffy about duct tape

For some, the distinct — OK, ugly — appearance of duct tape on a broken chair, screen or garden hose is something to be proud of — the signature of a true DIYer. Now tapemaker Scotch is releasing transparent duct tape. The UV- and water-resistant tape is available at the usual home centers and hardware stores. Four-yard rolls sell for about $2; 20-yard rolls for about $6.

Scotch says the versatile tape is even stronger than traditional duct tape while making quick repairs less noticeable. So where's the fun in that?

To thwart Hogwarts

As the fifth Harry Potter adventure approaches its June 21 release, religious battle lines continue to be drawn over one of the best-selling series in history. The American Library Association says Harry Potter books have held the No. 1 spot on the list of 100 Most Challenged Books since 1999, even as the two movie spin-offs earned $1.8 billion. A challenged book is one whose presence in libraries and classrooms has been the subject of protest or debate.

Here in the Islands, no formal protests have been reported (in fact, at least two Episcopal vacation Bible schools — St. Andrew's and St. Clements — are using Harry Potter as their theme). But elsewhere, a few parents and some fundamentalist preachers are debating whether it is sinful to read about the witch- and wizard-driven Hogwarts and environs.
