Tonight's Must-See

"Lucky," 10 p.m., FX. Heading into the final four weeks of its season, this offbeat show keeps getting better. It can be funny one moment, touching the next. And tonight's episode is a terrific one that takes an existential twist. This is the 36th birthday for Lucky (John Corbett), and something terrible has happened. We can't tell what, however, because during this half-hour, the show will toy with us and with reality. Stick with it, though. It adds up to a strong, emotional episode.

Jay Mohr
"The Last Comic Standing" premiere, 8 p.m., NBC. The world is full of gifted comedians, says Jay Mohr, who created and hosts this standup comedy competition. "What surprised me is how many unbelievably funny people there are who I'd never heard of." The clever comics are competing for a special on Comedy Central and a deal with NBC in this eight-episode show. Many cover a broad range, Mohr says.

There are New Yorkers and a guy from Elk River, Minn. There are pros and "a guy who was teaching kindergarten the day before the audition." Tonight, 20 will be chosen. Next week the field is trimmed to 10, and the finalists will share a house and have face-offs and challenges. "It's like '8 Mile' with jokes," Mohr says.

Of Note

"JAG," 7 p.m., CBS. In a rerun, a war game leads to death and a leader faces prosecution.

"8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," 7 and 7:30 p.m., ABC. Both episodes have the dad (John Ritter) making decisions that anger his daughters. In the first, he likes Bridget's boyfriend simply because his dad (played by Terry Bradshaw) is a former baseball star. In the second, he has different rules for guys than for girls.

"Keen Eddie," 8 p.m., Fox. Last week's entertaining debut sent a macho American cop (Mark Valley) to London. Now he reluctantly stays there, surrounded by a stern boss and quirky assistant. In addition, he and his landlady's beautiful daughter are reluctantly sharing an apartment. Tonight, Eddie probes a horse theft and comes across two people from last week's story.

"The Osbournes," 10:30 p.m., MTV. After lots of reruns, the show is back with fresh episodes. Jack, who is back from drug rehab, has his 17th birthday party.
