UH coed sailing team third at national meet

The University of Hawai'i sailing team won three races and finished second in two others to move from fourth to third place after the second day of the ICSA North American Coed Dinghy Championships at Detroit yesterday.

Harvard was first with 108 points, followed by St. Mary's of Maryland (156), Hawai'i (173) and Southern California (188). The meet ends today. Scores were subject to protests.

UH's A-division team of Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock had two firsts, two seconds and a fifth in races 9 to 13 for 86 points. Winds of 12-15 knots made for excellent sailing on Lake St. Clair yesterday.

Hawai'i B-division team of Joey Pasquali, Steven Brown and Sarah Hitchcock won one race and scored 87 points and are sixth after 12 races.



TRACK AND FIELD

• Five sign with UH: Ku'ulei Karratti, a recent graduate of Ka'u High, was one of five athletes who signed letters of intent with the University of Hawai'i, according to head coach Carmyn James.

Other signees were pole vaulter Eva Tanner (El Cajon, Calif.) from Grossmont High; long-distance runner Monica Su (Camarillo, Calif.) of Thousand Oaks High; distance runner Chantelle Laan of London, Ontario, who will also run for the cross country team; and Dana Buchanan of Beachburg, Ontario, whose strengths are in the 400- and 800-meter runs and the 400 hurdles.

Karratti, of Na'alehu, Hawai'i, participated in soccer, track and field and basketball at Ka'u.



TENNIS

• Novack gets silver: Former University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Lynn Novack lost in the doubles final of the U.S. Open Clay Court Championships recently in Florida. Novack also reached the singles consolation final.

Novack and partner Maren Haus of New Jersey fell to Casey Gladding and Gaelle Kurtz, 6-4, 6-0. Novack lost the consolation singles in three sets.

• Fujii gets gold: Hawai'i's Lurline Fujii won the gold medal in Women's 60-64 singles at the 2003 Summer National Senior Games in Newport News, Va.

Fujii won her singles final 6-0, 6-4, then partnered with James Toguchi to take gold in mixed doubles. In all, Fujii won 10 matches.

Hawai'i's Emmy Lou Armstrong lost in the quarterfinals of Women's 75-79 singles.

• Bill falls in final: Kaua'i's Sinclair Bill lost the final of the USTA National Women's 60 Hard Courts to Suella Steel, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6. The tournament was in La Jolla, Calif.

Bill, the 2000 champion, was seeded third. She also took second in doubles.



SOCCER

• Vaiete dominates: Host Vaiete won three of the four championships at the Pacific Cup Soccer Tournament, which ended Sunday, at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Vaiete won the men's open division with a 2-0 victory over the Dawgz. Vaiete defeated the Clayton Wonders 3-1 in the men's over-40 championship and won the 30-over title with a 3-0 victory over the Berkeley Pars.

Leahi defeated Leahi 87 1-0 in the women's title game.



TRACK

• Junior Olympic Program: The Hawai'i USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Program begins with a preliminary meet on Saturday at Kaiser High School track.

Meets continue every Saturday until the program's championships on July 19.

The event, sponsored by USATF Youth Athletics Committee, focuses on fun and there is no scoring. It is open to athletes born in 1985 and later.

Fee for the program is $15 for all seven meets. Walk-up registration begins at 7 a.m. with events starting at 7:30 a.m.
