O'ahu man charged in robbery, knifing

An O'ahu man faces various charges after a robbery and a stabbing early Sunday morning in 'Aiea, police said.

Ben Faitele, 29, is accused of taking $10 from a 19-year-old woman near the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Kanuku Street.

According to a police statement filed in District Court, Faitele then confronted two men, 21 and 24, who were walking on Kanuku Street and "false cracked" the younger man in the face.

Faitele ran away when the older man reached into his backpack, suggesting it contained a weapon, but returned a few minutes later with a knife and stabbed the older man repeatedly in the abdomen, police said.

The victims were taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where the stabbing victim was initially listed in critical condition.

Faitele remains in custody with bail set at $35,000.

Woman accused of altering odometer

An O'ahu grand jury has indicted a woman suspected of rolling back the odometer of a car on charges of theft and misrepresenting the mileage on an automobile.

Mariann Woods, 26, faces up to five years in prison and a fine if convicted of the theft charge, and one year in jail and a fine if convicted of misrepresenting the mileage of a 1992 Toyota Previa she was selling.

The indictment was handed down on May 21. Woods pleaded not guilty and her trial is expected to begin on Aug. 11 before First Circuit Court Judge Michael Wilson.

Neither Woods nor her attorney could be reached for comment yesterday afternoon.

La'ie crash hurts two, closes highway

A single-car accident in La'ie Monday injured two people and closed a portion of Kamehameha Highway for nearly seven hours.

A 47-year-old Waihe'e man was trying to pass a vehicle when he lost control of his 2002 Chevy Tahoe, said Sgt. Alan Vegas of the Honolulu Police Department's traffic division. Vegas said speed was a factor in the 9:40 p.m. crash near Naniloa Loop.

The car hit a curb and rock wall and overturned, ejecting the driver and a 49-year-old woman from Waihe'e.

Both were taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where the driver was listed in critical condition; his passenger was listed in guarded condition.

No further information about their conditions was available yesterday.

The accident closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions. Traffic was rerouted to Naniloa Loop on the La'ie side and turned around at the La'ie Corporation Yard on the Kahuku side. The highway reopened at 3:10 a.m.
