Woman facing assault charges

Police are seeking assault charges against a 19-year-old woman who is accused of stabbing her estranged boyfriend in the back after an early morning argument Tuesday.

The couple got into an argument while sitting in the woman's car. She got angry and stabbed the man, police said. The man was listed in critical condition. The woman later turned herself in to the Kailua police station.

Man charged in alleged attack

A 38-year-old man has been charged in a meat cleaver attack on his girlfriend.

The woman declined medical attention.

Police have charged John Gatewood with various counts of assault, terroristic threatening, kidnapping and abuse of a household member. His bond is $75,000.

Gatewood and his 37-year-old girlfriend were arguing at her Lunalilo Street residence Tuesday when he became angry that she wanted to end their 2-week-old relationship, police said.

Gatewood grabbed a meat cleaver and cut the woman on her right arm, left forearm, left wrist, abdomen and throat, police said. She also had superficial wounds to her left elbow.

After the attack, police said, Gatewood left and the woman fled to a friend's home and called police. While the woman was away from her home, Gatewood returned and broke in through the front door. He threw her computer and equipment out the second-story window, police said.
