Missing child alerts mandated

Radio and television stations are federally mandated to broadcast missing child alerts, state officials said yesterday.

The State Emergency Communications Committee has approved a new emergency alert plan to include child-abduction notices.

Broadcasters are required to air information on the child and the abductor within two minutes of receiving an alert from the police.



Waikiki board names officers

The Waikiki Neighborhood Board re-elected Robert Finley as its chairman at its Tuesday meeting.

Jeffrey Apaka won re-election as vice chairman, David "Mac" McCulloch was elected secretary, and Mike Peters was elected treasurer.



Scholarship to Japan offered

The consul general of Japan is accepting applications for the 2004 Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology) and Senshu Gakko (Professional Training School) scholarship.

The three-year scholarship includes one year of Japanese language study and two years of training at a professional school. Training is offered in various fields including architecture, hotel management and photography.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens between 17 and 21 years old, high school graduates and in good health.

Scholarship benefits include transportation to and from Japan, accommodations, a monthly allowance and partial medical coverage.

Center to mark 1st anniversary

The Filipino Community Center will celebrate its first anniversary tomorrow, with beautification activities and the screening of the award-winning documentary "An Untold Triumph."

Activities are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. with a beautification project around the center. The public is welcome. Food and entertainment will be offered at 11:30 a.m., and the film will be shown at 1:30 p.m.

Lottery set for park project

Haleakala National Park will hold a lottery June 20 to select 12 people to join park staff on a three-day backpacking trip and volunteer service project slated July 11-13.

Participants will spend two nights in park cabins and take part in a service project at the Paliku area before hiking down the Kaupo Gap.

To enter the lottery, send your name, address, phone number and number of people in your party (one or two) to: Kaupo Service Trip, Haleakala National Park, P.O. Box 369, Makawao, HI 96768.
