Honolulu Marathon loses Japan sponsor

Advertiser Staff

A Japan-based company that provided sports drinks and cash to the Honolulu Marathon has pulled out as a sponsor of the race.

Amino Vital had been a contributing sponsor to the race for the past three years. But Honolulu Marathon Association president Jim Barahal said yesterday the company notified him this week that it would pull out for economic reasons.

Barahal said the loss was "significant," but not overwhelming. He said Amino Vital contributed about 5 percent of the marathon's annual budget.

Barahal said other sports drink companies have expressed interest in becoming a sponsor, but said it may be too late to line one up for the Dec. 14 race. If no sponsor is found, the marathon will provide the sports drink for the runners, he said.
