Toyama, Hong capture Junior PGA qualifier

Travis Toyama and Lindsay Hong won the Westfield Junior Aloha Section PGA Championship titles yesterday, but only Hong will play at the national tournament.

Toyama, a 17-year-old University High Student, shot a 2-under-par 70 yesterday to finish at 139 at the Fazio Course at The Turtle Bay Resort. Toyama, relinquished his trip to the national tournament in Ohio, to play in the Junior World in San Diego during the same week.

Chris Caycayon (70 yesterday) will play at the tournament in Westfield Center, Ohio. Caycayon, a Kamehameha student, won a three-way playoff with Ryan Perez (74) and David Kim (73). The trio tied for second at 147.

Hong, a 17-year-old Punahou student, won the girls division shooting a 1-over 73 for a 146 total. Stephanie Kono (75) and Britney Choy (73) tied for second at 148.

The 28th Westfield Junior PGA Championship is July 16-19.



BASKETBALL

UH camps still open: Next week's University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine camps still have openings. Players can sign up anytime before the camp starts by hand-delivering a registration form and check to the basketball office.

Session No. 1 is Monday to Wednesday and designed for boys and girls ages 6-12. The second session is Thursday to June 21 and is for girls from the age of 12 to those entering 12th grade.

TENNIS

UH-Hilo players honored: Three Hawai'i-Hilo women's tennis players were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Nathalia Jung was selected the NCAA Division II West Region Senior of the Year while the doubles team of Michiko Tanaka and Mai Fujii received All-American honors.

Jung, a senior from Porto Allegro, Brazil, was 13-5 in first singles and 16-7 in doubles competition. She was ranked 40th in the final singles poll.

Tanaka and Fujii were ranked 10th in the final poll and finished with a 17-5 doubles record.

Tanaka is a junior from Osaka, Japan. Fujii is a freshman from Fukuoka City, Japan.
