Correira comes out on top at SuperBrawl

Hilo's Wesley "Cabbage" Correira squeezed out a split decision over Justin Eilers (30-29, 28-29, 29-28) in Friday night's SuperBrawl Superbout at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

In the other feature bout, Andre Roberts quickly disposed of Jonathan Ivey by submission, setting up a possible future bout with Correira.

Joe Doerksen won the eight-man middleweight tournament by defeating Desi Miner, Jay Buck and Brandan Sequin.



WATER POLO

• BYUH signs recruit: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team signed its fourth recruit for this fall season.

Jamie Jacobson, a first team All-California Interscholastic Federation Division IV player from Malibu High School, scored 115 goals this past season and was the team captain and its Most Valuable Player.

Jacobson, who is 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, was also named the Most Valuable Player of the Frontier League and was on the All-Frontier League First Team. Jacobson also made the CIF Division IV All-Star Team.



TENNIS

• U.S. in finals: In a repeat of last year, the United States will play top-seeded Netherlands today in the women's final of the 2003 Invacare World Team Cup in Sopot, Poland.

The second-seeded U.S. men play Japan in the final. Japan upset the top-seeded team from The Netherlands to reach the final, while the U.S. beat the Czech Republic.

Beth Arnoult, from Kula, Maui, helped the U.S. sweep Korea in its first match.

Arnoult and partner Hope Llewellen won their doubles match, 6-2, 6-0. Arnoult and Llewellen lost in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3, against Sweden, but the U.S. won both singles matches to advance to the final.

John Greer of Kane'ohe is on the U.S. men's team but has not played.



TRACK AND FIELD

The registration deadline for the Hershey Youth Program State Track and Field Finals has been extended to Tuesday.

The deadline is extended to allow Parks and Recreation Programs, which start on June 12, time to register participants.

The track and field finals will be Saturday at Kaiser High School, from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

MEETINGS

• QB Club guests: Teddy Limoz Jr., the WBO Asia Pacific welterweight champion and promoter Tom Moffatt will be among the featured speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

University of Hawaii linebackers coach George Lumpkin and BYUH tennis coach Dave Porter will also be speaking.

The luncheon-meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant. The public is invited.



FOOTBALL

• Blast announce schedule: The Pacific Blast of the Women's Professional Football League will open their season on Aug. 3 against three-time champion Houston.

The Blast will be competing in the National Conference, South Division which consists of the Houston Energy, Austin Rage, Dallas Diamonds, and Missouri Prowlers.

All Blast home games will be played on Sundays at 3 p.m. at Aloha Stadium, unless otherwise noted.
