Main bursts in Hale'iwa

A 6-inch water main burst in Hale'iwa late yesterday afternoon, leaving only one lane of Kamehameha Highway open through the center of town and 20 homes without water.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews worked through the evening to repair the main.

Repairs were expected to be completed by today.

The pipe burst across from the KFC restaurant, said Denise DeCosta, spokeswoman for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.

Residents in and around Sand Island, downtown Ho-nolulu, Hickam, 'Ewa Beach and Wai'anae will be affected.

Two runways will be closed for removal of rubber from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. daily. During the closures, aircraft will depart from a runway that sends them over the downtown area. Arrivals will fly over the 'Ewa plains on their approach.

Help sought finding robber

Police are seeking information about a bank robbery Friday at the Kaimuki branch of American Savings Bank.

Police said a man handed a note demanding cash to a teller at about 2 p.m. and was given an undisclosed amount of money that included a dye pack.

The robber left the bank at 1139 12th Ave. and was last seen running makai through the back parking lot toward Harding Avenue. Police believe the man also was responsible for the June 4 robbery of City Bank in Makiki.

The suspect is described as in his early 20s, 5 feet 6 to 5 feet 9, 140 pounds, with a slim build and medium complexion. He had a bandage across his nose and was wearing a light-blue collared shirt and a white baseball cap with black insignia.

Kaua'i lifeguards receive honor

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Three county lifeguards who saved four residents trapped in a cliffside cave on Memorial Day have been presented with certificates of commendation by Mayor Bryan Baptiste.

Mark McKamey, Gavin Kennelly and Chris Pico were lauded for their rescues at the site known as Two-Door Cave, near Hanakoa Valley on the Na Pali Coast. Four people were stranded when surf rose while they were inside the cave with an inflatable boat.

The lifeguards, using a jet-powered watercraft, brought the victims out of the cave one by one between swells.
