Youth paddlers serve up Father's Day gifts

HALE'IWA — Many dads in Na 'Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a canoe clubs were treated to a special Father's Day yesterday.

"They were all here today — my family, my extended family and my canoe club family," said Koa Kai Canoe Club's Kimo Olele, who steered his masters 40-and-over team to a narrow second-place finish to Ka Moi. "Cannot go wrong, cannot go wrong."
From back, Gary Murakami, Joe Ah Yuen, Rodney Roman, Gene Albinio, Lloyd Yamasaki and George Haberman picked up their first win of the season in the men's 55-and-over event at the Leeward Canoe Club's Father's Day Regatta.
Kane'ohe youth paddlers once again created enough of a cushion to lead their club to a fourth straight victory as the club captured first place at the North Shore Regatta at Hale'iwa Beach Park.
Kane'ohe finished with 84 points in the AAA division — for clubs that enter more than 18 races — 18 points ahead of second-place Lokahi.
Olele's two sons are also steersmen for Koa Kai. James III, 25, and Justin, 23, steered the victorious men's novice A team and the mixed Novice B team, respectively.
"Father's Day at the regatta cannot get any better," said James III, father of Mahealani, 4, who will have a new-born brother in August.
"I get to spend time with my dad," Justin said. "That's something special."
Manu O Ke Kai finished third with 38 points, followed by Waikiki Yacht Club with 31 and Hawaiian Outrigger with 11.
The Kane'ohe youth paddlers won eight of the 13 races — boys 12-and-younger, mixed 12-and-younger, girls and boys 14-and-younger, girls and boys 15-and-younger, boys 16-and-younger and boys 18-and-younger.
Kane'ohe's youth added three second-place and two third-place finishes while the adults won three races — men's and mixed gold 55-and-over and mixed masters 40-and-over.
"The Kane'ohe kids are committed, love to practice everyday and give 110 percent every practice," said Castle High School student Titi Kawainui, 15, a member of the Kane'ohe girls 16-and-under team that finished second to Manu O Ke Kai.

Lokahi won the prestigious women's and men's senior races. The women reached 50 wins in a row against Hui Wa'a competition despite running into a little problem.

"When we got to the half-mile mark to make the turn, we had no flag so we had to turn on an imaginary flag," said Jennifer Thompson, who has been a part of the team since the streak started. "We ended up going a little further to make sure we wouldn't get disqualified for turning too early."
Thompson was joined by Iwa Bush, also a part of the streak since the beginning. Mikala Bradley and Ginger Lockett, also original members of the streak, helped win the women's open-4 race yesterday.
The Lokahi senior men won for the first time in two years.
"A different combination," said Lokahi head coach Robert Viernes, who also paddled on the senior men's team. "We had a lighter crew than the other men's senior races this year."
Leahi also won the girls 18-and-younger, women's novice A, as well as women's and men's freshmen.
Manu O Ke Kai also won the women's and men's sophomore, and the mixed masters 45-and-over.
Waikiki Yacht Club won the women's gold 55-and-older division while Hawaiian Outrigger won the boys 13-and-younger.
Koa Kai scored 40 points to take the AA division — for clubs that enter nine to 17 events.
Na Keiki O Ka Mo'i finished second with 30 points, followed by North Shore with 21, Windward Kai with 13, Kamehameha with 10, Kamamalahoe with nine, Kai Poha with five and Kalihi Kai with three.
Koa Kai won the mixed novice B, men's Novice B, men's novice A, and men's masters 50-and-older. Ka Mo'i also won the girls 12-and-younger race. North Shore won the women's masters 40-and-older and the women's masters 50-and-older. Windward Kai took the girls 13-and-younger.
Waikiki Beach Boys won the A division — for clubs that enter six to eight events — with 15 points, followed by Imua with three, 'Alapahoe with one and Kumulokahi Elks with no points. The Waikiki Beach Boys won the women's novive B and mixed open 6.
Ka Moi's Willy Haia joined his daughters Crystal and Haia to take a special Father's Day race.
Some families, like the Abbeys of Kane'ohe, had three generations of paddlers competing.
"It was nice to celebrate Father's Day with all the generations of my ohana," said Ana Abbey. "I couldn't find a better way to celebrate Father's Day than paddling with my ohana."
