A man and his dog were left homeless yesterday after fire destroyed his 'Ewa Beach house and damaged two others.

Domino Monic and his dog Niko are comforted by a firefighter after a fire that destroyed Monic's home in 'Ewa Beach. The early-morning blaze also damaged two nearby houses and a storage shack, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

When firefighters arrived at the scene on Fort Weaver Road at about 6:30 a.m., the Leeward Estates home of Domino Monic was engulfed in flames, said Capt. Scott Lawton, a spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.

Two nearby homes and a storage shack also were damaged, Lawton said. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

The fire gutted Monic's single-story, wood-frame house, causing $175,000 in damage to the building and $25,000 in damage to its contents, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The fire caused $60,000 in damage to the roof and vinyl siding on a second house and $10,000 worth of damage to its contents, leaving a couple and their son displaced because of smoke and water damage.

Flames also caused $70,000 in damage to the structure of a third house and $10,000 in damage to its contents, Tejada said.

The American Red Cross provided clothing and other necessities, said disaster services coordinator Danny Tengan. Both damaged homes were insured, he said.
