Rainbows sign outfielder

Advertiser Staff

Robbie Wilder, an all-league center fielder from Sierra (Calif.) College, has signed with the University of Hawai'i, according to UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Wilder was an all-Bay Valley League player, finishing second in the conference in batting (.398) and stolen bases (17).

"He is the type of player that can be very exciting for the program," Trapasso said.

"Knowing that we were probably going to have to replace Tim Montgomery, we signed Robbie as a great option to play center field for us next year.

"He is a true center fielder that is solid, and I like the fact that he is a left-handed hitter that has the potential to do a lot of things for us in the top of the batting order."

Wilder chose UH over Texas A&M and will enter UH as a sophomore.

Montgomery was taken in the 23rd round by Cleveland and said he is ready to go pro.

Porter honored

University of Hawai'i first baseman Stacey Porter, the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was named to the first team of the Easton Sports 2003 Fast Pitch Softball All-America teams.

Porter, one of 15 players named to the first team, was the only UH player named to any of the three All-America teams.

NCAA champion UCLA placed four players on the team, including pitcher Keira Goerl. Goerl pitched a nine-inning no-hitter in leading the Bruins to a 1-0 victory over California in the championship game.
