Man attempts to rob Hilo bank

Police are looking for a man who tried to rob the Home Street Bank in Hilo yesterday afternoon.

The man walked into the bank about 1 p.m., showed a knife and demanded money from tellers, police said.

When the tellers ignored him, police said the man climbed over the counter and tried to open locked drawers. When the man failed to get any money, he climbed back over the counter and went into the lobby, where he again demanded money.

The man then threw his knife down and ran out of the bank, police said.

He was last seen riding a dark-colored bicycle toward Kilauea Avenue, police said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. Callers remain anonymous. A $1,000 reward is offered if information leads to an arrest, indictment or recovery of property.

Mother charged in attack on son

Authorities have charged a mother with the attempted murder of her 30-year-old son. Police said she attempted to stab him with a knife.

Bernadette Chamizo, 54, was arrested early today at a Sheridan Street home after an argument with her son got out of hand.

Chamizo began arguing with her son after he asked her for money, police said. They said she then pulled a three-inch knife from under her T-shirt, raised it in the air and attempted to stab her son.

Chamizo's son grabbed her wrist and disarmed her, police said.
