Just how effective is vitamin C? It's a debate that's generated more than 80,000 scientific papers and reports since its chemical nature was discovered in the early 20th century. In an upcoming Honolulu lecture, Dr. Thomas Levy, author of "Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases and Toxins: Curing the Incurable," presents new information on the efficiency of vitamin C in fighting life-threatening infections when administered directly into the bloodstream, and on how large enough doses of vitamin C taken orally may prevent many infections occurring.

In layman terms, what this really means is "find out if this stuff is good for you."

Levy will speak on "To C or not to C: That is the Question," at 7 p.m. on June 26 at the Integrated Health Care office, 4218 Wai'alae Ave.

Surfrider serenades

OK, this isn't exactly John Candy explaining himself to Tom Hanks in "Splash," but you get the idea.

A year ago, the Sheraton Moana Surfrider launched its Courtyard Concert Series, originally planned to be three events. But the series has taken off, and the hotel is sticking with it through the end of this year.

The courtyard series is broadcast live by The Breeze radio station at 99.5 FM. Concerts are scheduled one Thursday a month through December from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The next event is tomorrow night, with entertainment by Martin Pahinui, George Kuo, Aaron Mahi, Kani Lau and a surprise guest.

Bathing beauty

Na Mea Hawai'i, Maile Meyer's new downtown store for all things Hawaiian, will be lathering up today with veteran soapmaker Steve Cromwell.

Cromwell, from The Soap Box, a local company specializing in handcrafted soaps, can dish on lemongrass-ginger fragrances and loofa-glycerine soaps from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the store, 851 Fort Street Mall; 548-2665.

In the fashion zone

Are you a clothes hound and a Hawai'i fashion junkie? Then cough up $60 — or $500 for a table of 10 — to catch the 17th Annual Governor's Fashion Awards on June 27 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It's the premier event for the Retail Merchants of Hawai'i.
