Would-be bank robber leaves empty-handed

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

Big Island police yesterday were looking for a man who tried to rob the HomeStreet Bank in Hilo but gave up when no one would give him any money.

The man walked into the bank at about 1 p.m. with a cloth over his head and a respirator covering his nose and mouth. He waved a knife and demanded money several times, police said.

When the tellers ignored him, he climbed over the counter and tried to open locked drawers, police said. Unable to get any money, he climbed back over the counter into the lobby area, and again demanded money.

Still, no one complied. The man threw down his knife in frustration and ran out of the bank. He was last seen riding a dark-colored bicycle toward Kilauea Avenue in the Puna direction.

Call Detective Greg Esteban at (808) 961-2384 or CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
