State gets $15 million for security

Advertiser Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — The Hawai'i Department of Defense will receive $15 million in federal grant money for homeland security.

The department's civil defense division could use the money for emergency response and to help offset additional security costs from the war with Iraq.

Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawai'i, said the money, included in a wartime spending bill, "will further help ensure the safety of Hawai'i from any possible terrorist threat.''

Other Hawai'i lawmakers have asked the Bush administration this year for millions in federal money to improve security around key infrastructure and to strengthen law enforcement and emergency response capabilities.
