HONOLULU

Wai'alae fire damages home

Two people were left homeless last night after a fire heavily damaged their Wai'alae home.

The fire at 1008 Koko Head Avenue was reported at 9:15 p.m. HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said the fire was confined to the bathroom and was brought under control within 10 minutes. But the duplex unit was small, and the smoke damage was pervasive, Tejada said.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the couple. The second unit in the duplex was not damaged.


Fumes close satellite hall

Fumes from an unidentified source led authorities to close the satellite city hall at Ala Moana Center yesterday. Honolulu officials were looking for the source of the fumes, which were first noticed Monday.

One employee reported tearing eyes, but no other health effects have been reported, officials said.

The municipal facility normally is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Health agency fines roofer

The state Health Department has cited Beachside Roofing LLC for violating state hazardous waste rules after containers of roofing and waterproofing paints were left open at its site in Kapolei.

The company was fined $40,500 for two violations: mismanagement and treatment of hazardous wastes, and storage of hazardous waste without a permit.


Meeting to view H-1 interchange

The state Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting today about the H-1 Freeway rehabilitation project in the vicinity of the Makakilo interchange.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting at the Makakilo Elementary School cafeteria will cover the condition of the interchange, work that will be done and a tentative schedule for the project.

Scam targets Kaua'i elderly

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Unlicensed contractors have victimized elderly Kaua'i residents in Kawaihau, Lihu'e and Koloa with a door-to-door powerwashing scam, according to the county Office on Elderly Affairs.

In most cases, one or two men have appeared at homes, offering to powerwash homes. When the job has been agreed to, the work has been poorly performed or incomplete, the office said.

Elderly residents are urged to check with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs at 274-3200 to see whether those offering services are licensed contractors.


Junk mail added to recycle effort

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The county's Kaua'i Recycles program, which has drop boxes in six communities around the island, has added junk mail to its list of recyclable materials.

The junk mail bin will take white and colored paper, envelopes with and without windows, catalogs, magazines, glossy advertisements and phone books.

YMCA to clean Waimanalo area

Some 200 children from the YMCA summer program will clean Waimanalo Beach tomorrow as part of their summer activities that include service to the community.

Children ages 9-12 from five YMCA branches will team up to clean "Sherwood's," then enjoy the beach with swimming and games.
