Lex Brodie resigns from Board of Education

Former businessman Lex Brodie has resigned from the state Board of Education, citing health reasons.

Brodie, 88, submitted a letter of resignation yesterday and it took effect today, Department of Education spokesman Greg Knudsen said.

Brodie was first elected to the board in 1992 and served in an at-large seat. Several years before he ran for office, he led a group of citizen volunteers that inspected public schools and pushed state government to make schools cleaner, safer and better maintained.

Brodie retired in 1991 as head of Lex Brodie's Tire Co., which still operates under his name. He is also a former president of Small Business Hawaii.

He became well known for his tire company TV commercials, which he ended with what would be his famous catch phrase, "Thank you ... very much."
