$70,000 loss in boat fire at Ala Wai

A fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to the 76-foot sailing vessel Stella last night at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor. The fire was reported at 6:47 p.m. and brought under control at 7:32 p.m., said fire spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

The cause of the fire, which was confined to the lower level of the boat, was not immediately known.

Boat owner Fred Madlener was at home in Kane'ohe when the fire occurred. Madlener built the Stella in 1980.
