Stanley spurs U.S. volleyball

Former University of Hawai'i player Clay Stanley scored a match-high 26 points to lead the USA men's national volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Korea Tuesday night at Western Nebraska Community College.

The match was the second of a five-match domestic tour in Colorado and Nebraska between the two teams.

Stanley, a Kaiser High graduate from Honolulu, had 23 kills, two blocks and one service ace in the 25-22, 25-21, 30-32, 25-20 victory that evened the series at one win apiece.

Stanley had just three attack errors in 28 attempts and posted a hitting percentage of .714.

The third match of the tour is scheduled for today at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS

U.S. gets silver: The United States women, with Kula's Beth Arnoult, lost to The Netherlands, and the U.S. men, with Kane'ohe's John Greer, fell to Japan Sunday in the finals of the Invacare World Team Cup, in Poland.

The U.S. Quads team won the 32-country event. The U.S. Juniors took second to Sweden.

The next World Team Cup will be January in New Zealand. The Paralympics will be in September 2004, in Athens.

TENNIS

Job openings at Central O'ahu Park: The Hawaii Pacific Tennis Foundation is accepting applications for three full-time job openings at Central O'ahu Regional Park. The foundation was the only group to bid on operating and managing the new tennis complex.

CROSS COUNTRY

Torres to coach HPU: Raul Torres has been Hawai'i Pacific University's men's and women's cross country coach.

Torres, who was a member of HPU's 1993-94 cross country team and graduated in 1995, was an assistant to Vien Schwinn last season.

CORRECTION

Asato honored: Ryan Asato of Mid-Pacific earned honorable mention as an outfielder on The Advertiser's All-State Baseball team published Tuesday. Another last name was listed.
