Lumpkin to be named UH defensive coordinator

By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer

University of Hawai'i football assistants Rich Miano and George Lumpkin will coordinate the Warriors' defense this coming season, although Lumpkin will hold the title of defensive coordinator, UH head coach June Jones told The Advertiser today.

Jones said Miano will be in charge of the pass defense and Lumpkin will handle the run defense. During practices, Miano and Lumpkin both will oversee the defense, Jones said. During games, Jones said, Lumpkin will call defensive plays from the coaches' booth and Miano will be on the sideline tutoring the players.

"This is not unique," Jones said of the coordinator-by-committee approach.

Jones said the same system was used during the Warriors' spring practice, when Jones, Miano, Lumpkin and assistant coach Vantz Singletary coordinated the defense.

"They both will do a very good job," Jones said.

The job of defensive coordinator was vacated when Kevin Lempa resigned in February to coach defensive backs at Boston College.

Yesterday, Saint Louis School athletic director Cal Lee agreed to join the Warriors as a defensive assistant, probably in charge of the strong-side linebackers. That opened the way for Lumpkin to return to defensive coordinator, a job he held in 1995, Bob Wagner's last season as UH's head coach.

Lumpkin was the Kamehameha Schools' defensive coordinator for three years before returning to UH when Jones was hired in January 1998. Lumpkin has served as UH's associate head coach for four years. He is expected to retain that title.
