Kaua'i man killed when car hits tree

A 19-year-old man died in a one-vehicle accident yesterday on Kaua'i after he swerved off the road and hit a coconut tree.

The man was traveling northbound on Kuhio Highway near Kukuihale Road in Anahola when he lost control of his car about 2 a.m., police said. He died at the scene.



Fire damages Wahiawa home

A Wahiawa house fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage yesterday.

No one was home at the Uluwehi Place residence, said HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada. Three companies were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. to the four-bedroom home.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 11:15 a.m. The fire caused $20,000 in structural damage and $10,000 to the house's contents, Tejada said. The cause was not immediately known.
